Äkäslompolo is also known as the "village of seven mountains" and is a small village near Yllästunturi. Yllästunturi is a nationally renowned ski resort. Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park is located to the east of Äkäslompolo. Although Äkäslompolo has only about 500 inhabitants, the largest grocery store in Finland, called Jounin Kauppa, is located here. In summer and in autumn the area is popular for hiking and fishing and in winter the perfect place for practicing various winter sports like downhill skiing, snowboarding, skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
