Lefkada is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea connected to the mainland by a bridge. The island is 293 km sq and is max. 35 km long and 15 km wide. The highest point is 1158 m above sea level and the island has 23 000 inhabitants. In contrast to Crete or the Balearic islands, Lefkada does not have mass tourism. The busiest tourist resorts are Nidri and on the east coast, the town of Leukas, which is right by the bridge to the mainland. Popular excursion spots, not only for tourists but also for the population, are the beaches at Porto Katziki and Kathisma on the west coast. Despite tourism, many places, particularly the mountain villages, have retained their typical character.
