Ylitornio is a municipality with approximately 4300 inhabitants in the province of Finnish-Lapland, directly by the Swedish border. Here, the 242 meter high hill Aavasaksa with a small ski centre, a cafeteria-restaurant and an observation tower is located. From Aavasaksa you can see the midnight sun even though the hill is located several kilometers south from the Polar Circle. In winter you can enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing or go for a snowshoe walk in the area. Other winter activities are snowmobile and reindeer safaris and dog sled excursions. About 50 km North from Aavasaksa the Lake Miekojärvi is located. The lake is the largest in western Lapland and very popular for fishing zander and pike. In the middle of the lake you will find the sand dune and beach Orhinselkä, probably the most beautiful natural phenomenon in Lapland.
In Ylitornio there is a railway station with connections north towards Kolari and south towards Helsinki. Kemi-Tornio Airport is 90 km away and Rovaniemi Airport is 120 km from Ylitornio.
